Deck Hunter

February 24, 1928 - June 22, 2010


Deck Hunter, 82, of Sheridan, formerly Big Horn, passed away June 22, 2010, following a short battle with Cancer. Deck was born February 24, 1928 in Sussex, NJ to Martin and Ethel (Ewald) Decker. She met her husband Bob Hunter while attending college in Boston, MA. They married June 10, 1950.

She retired from education having been a high school librarian in Bellbrook, Ohio and a teacher at both University of Dayton and Wright State University in their outdoor education departments. Deck was an avid camper, backpacker, climber and birder. She spent many years with Girl and Boy Scouts teaching backpacking, being a troop leader and taking scouts on trips from Ohio to points across the United States including Wyoming, Mount Washing in NH and Borah Peak in Idaho.

She was a wilderness ranger for the Big Horn National Forest Service for several seasons and a long time volunteer at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. She wrote several books on Big Horn and Sheridan County history as well as a weekly column Backyard Chatter for the Sheridan Press for seven years. She truly loved the state to which she and Bob retired.

Deck was preceded in death by her parents and brother Martin Jr. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, a daughter Lyn Reinig of Sweet, ID, granddaughter Yavohne Gallagher of San Antonio, TX and Jany Reinig of Boise, ID as well as 3 great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place through Kane Funeral Home. No services will be held. Per Deck's wishes instead please spend time with a loved one or enjoy a moment in a special place.
